Whats it all about?

Snow Country Stories Japan is a podcast about life and travel in Japan’s legendary ‘yukiguni’ (snow country). A region known for its winters, snow has long dictated and nourished life throughout the year in the yukiguni, not to mention also shaping the traditions and lifestyles that have developed over many centuries. It’s a podcast about all aspects of life here. From stories of snow and mountains, rural villages, ski resorts and national parks to traditions and culture, myth and ritual, cuisine, artisans and more. Intended to reflect the reality, diversity and inherent qualities of the snow country rather than an idealised form.

Where is the snow country?

The term ‘雪国 / yukiguni’ (snow country) refers to the areas of Japan that experience heavy snow. The designation has a meteorological basis and economic implications however it is commonly used as an all-encompassing grouping that conjures romanticism for life in powder white landscapes.

It can be interpreted in different ways, to include or exclude specific areas, but most commonly references the prefectures of central and northern Honshu – from Fukui to Aomori and Iwate - that run along the Sea of Japan. The western prefecture of Tottori, the northern island of Hokkaido and inland areas encompassing the North Alps of Nagano are also included under a broad definition of snow country. In its most refined usage, ‘yukiguni’ refers to the prefectures of Niigata, Toyama and Fukui only. Coloured the darkest shade of blue on the map, these prefectures experience exceptionally heavy snow. Some areas of other inland prefectures – coloured the lightest shade of blue - are also classified as snow country, however without the entire prefecture carrying that designation.

Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are all located outside of the snow country; along with Nagoya, Fukuoka and most other major urban centres. As relatively few international visitors venture outside of those cities, the places, people and stories of the snow country remain largely known outside of Japan.

This podcast brings those stories to you.

And there’s a serious point…

Japan faces the challenge of a rapidly ageing and declining population. A problem most pronounced in regional areas including the yukiguni; a region that has for many years seen younger generations move away seeking opportunities in the major cities such as Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. As such, snow country is now also synonymous with old men and women, fading villages, shuttered businesses and abandoned homes.

Beautiful but often challenging, these are landscapes that take effort to live in and ultimately, for communities to survive, the old must be replaced by the young. Recent years have seen an increasing number of people return or relocate to the snow country, seeking more balanced lives and connection to the remarkable landscapes and breathing new life into the region. Snow Country Stories Japan shares the diverse stories and voices of the young and old, women and men, foreigners and Japanese choosing life in the snow country.

I hope that this podcast encourages more people to visit or better yet, move to and be part of the revitalisation of the snow country.
